Ole Proudly Displays his Destructive Handiwork

Flying around in a helicopter and dropping bombs on slopes you know are going to avalanche is tough work, but Mike “Ole” Olson was up for the task on Jan 14, 2005. He copyrighted his photos of destruction, so you will have to see them here.  Nice job dude, but it looks like you missed a couple of spots.

The Man:

WPG Jan 2005 Massacre

In January of 2005, the Wasatch Powderbird Guides outdid themselves for true destructive stupidity.  During a very high danger avalanche cycle, they flew around the Wasatch Mountains dropping bombs on slopes and causing MASSIVE avalanches which in turn took out acres of trees.  The tragic part of this random act of stupidity is that after the slopes slid they were unskiable (no powder) and if they had waited a few days, like all of the other backcountry users, the slopes would have stabilized on their own accord.  It was a bunch of little boys with bombs going out on a joy ride to destroy public land, with approval from the Forest Service.

WPG calls this \

This caused a huge uproar among backcountry users who complained bitterly to the Forest Service.  The Forest Service solution was that in the future, WPG had to report any trees they knocked down, which according to WPG has been none.  Big surprise.
